Carriers at War came out in 1992 from Strategic Studies Group, a developer known for detailed war games on MS-DOS. It was part of that wave of complex simulations that asked a lot from players, running on machines where managing memory and boot disks was part of the routine just to get started.
You command a World War II carrier task force in the Pacific, plotting every movement on an operational map. The main objective is to find the enemy fleet and sink their carriers before they can do the same to you. Signature mechanics include launching reconnaissance flights to spot targets, managing your deck load for strikes or fighter cover, and carefully timing your attack waves. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, with long stretches of searching punctuated by frantic, decisive combat. It feels like a high stakes game of chess played across hundreds of miles of ocean.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
