Play Chrono Trigger (EU)(BAHAMUT) Online

Chrono Trigger originally came out on the Super Nintendo, but I played the 2008 Nintendo DS version from Square Enix. It was a good time for RPGs on handhelds, with the DS offering both a second screen and portability for longer journeys. This release added some new dungeons and an extra ending, which gave returning players a reason to dive back in.

You control Crono and his companions as they travel across different eras, from prehistory to a far future, trying to prevent a global catastrophe. The game uses an active time battle system where enemies move in real time while you select commands; positioning matters because many techs and spells affect areas on the field. You explore towns and dungeons screen by screen, talking to characters whose responses can shift based on your actions, and certain key decisions branch the story toward one of multiple endings. The pacing is brisk, and random encounters are replaced by visible enemies on the map, so you can often avoid fights if you choose. It feels cohesive and responsive, like every mechanic serves the story and the flow of play.
