Game Overview

Chuck Rock on the Game Boy came out in 1992, developed by Core Design and published by Virgin Games. It was one of those side-scrolling platformers that felt right at home on the handheld, a straightforward adventure without a lot of frills, just solid level design and a clear goal. You controlled a big, cartoony caveman named Chuck, out to rescue his girlfriend from the clutches of the villainous Gary Gritter.

You move Chuck through prehistoric environments, jumping across gaps and belly-slamming enemies to defeat them. The main objective is to reach the end of each stage, fighting dinosaurs and avoiding environmental hazards like lava pits and falling rocks. Two signature mechanics are throwing rocks at distant enemies (especially flying ones) and using your belly as a weapon or a shield against attacks. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can spike in later levels, demanding precise jumps and well-timed throws. It feels satisfying to master the rhythm of the attacks and navigate the compact, challenging stages.
