Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck came out for the Sega Master System in 1993, developed by Core Design and published by Virgin Games. It was one of the later platformers on the system, arriving when the 16-bit era was already in full swing, but it held its own with a distinct visual style and straightforward action.
You control Chuck's son, Chuck Jr., who sets out to rescue his father from the villainous Gary Gritter. The game is a side-scrolling platformer where you move screen by screen, using a club to smash enemies and break through obstacles. You also perform a belly flop attack to stun foes or activate switches, and you frequently ride mine carts through hazardous tunnels. The pacing is brisk, with a moderate difficulty that spikes in later levels due to precise platforming and enemy placement. It feels satisfying to land solid hits and navigate the vibrant, prehistoric environments.
