I first played Classic Bubble Bobble on the Game Boy Color back in 1999. Taito brought this version to the handheld, and it fit right in with the kind of quick, pick-up-and-play games that were common on the platform at the time. It wasn't trying to be a huge adventure; it was just a straightforward, colorful arcade port that worked well on the go.

You control one of two little dragons, Bub or Bob, and your goal is to clear each single-screen level of enemies by trapping them in bubbles and then popping those bubbles. The mechanics are simple but satisfying: you blow bubbles to capture foes, avoid their attacks, and collect fruit and other items that appear when you pop bubbles. The game moves at a steady pace, with levels that gradually introduce more enemies and obstacles, keeping you on your toes without feeling overwhelming. It feels light and cheerful, even when you're trying to beat a tricky stage.
