Play Cohort II Online
Command pixelated legionaries through muddy battles where cavalry gets stuck and skirmishers bolt—terrain matters, and so does that one hill the enemy always takes. Your troops might actually listen when you yell "Testudo!"... or they might just wander off.

Cohort II came out in 1993 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Impressions Games. It was a time when strategy titles were finding their footing on PC, and this one focused squarely on small-scale tactical combat in ancient settings, without the grand campaign layers some other games offered.
You control groups of Roman soldiers, directing their movement and formation across grid-based battlefields. The main goal is to outmaneuver and defeat enemy forces using terrain and discipline. Key mechanics include ordering specific formations like the testudo, managing unit morale which can cause troops to break or flee, and exploiting high ground or obstacles for tactical advantage. The pacing is deliberate, with an emphasis on positioning over quick reactions, and the difficulty comes from managing your units' responsiveness and cohesion under pressure. It feels like carefully orchestrating a chaotic, low-tech battlefield where even simple commands can go awry.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
