Commander Keen 1: Marooned on Mars came out in 1990 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed and published by Apogee Software. It was one of those early side-scrolling platformers that really showed what the PC could do outside of text adventures and simpler arcade ports. You control Billy Blaze, an eight-year-old genius who becomes Commander Keen, exploring Mars screen by screen. Your main goal is to recover parts for your damaged ship while avoiding or shooting alien enemies called Vorticons. Key mechanics include using a pogo stick for high jumps, collecting candy bars and soda cans for points and health, and finding secret areas that often hold essential items. The pacing is brisk, with some tricky platforming sections that demand precision. It feels energetic and inventive, like a Saturday morning cartoon turned into a game.
