CutThroat Island for the Game Boy came out in 1995, developed by Software Creations. It was part of a wave of licensed games from that era, and it arrived alongside the film of the same name. On the small screen, it tried to capture some of that pirate adventure spirit, though it definitely had the limitations you'd expect from a handheld title at the time.
You control a pirate, moving screen by screen through ports, caves, and enemy ships. The main goal is to find pieces of a treasure map, which involves a lot of sword fighting, jumping across gaps, and searching for keys. Combat is straightforward but a bit clunky; you swing your sword at guards and other pirates, and timing your strikes matters. The game can be unforgiving, with enemies that respawn and some tricky platforming sections. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt to bring swashbuckling action to the Game Boy.
