Play Cutthroat Island on Snes Online
Slash through enemies, jump across gaps, and explore islands as you hunt for treasure map pieces in this classic side-scrolling action game.
Cutthroat Island came out on the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Software Creations. It was one of those licensed games that tried to ride the wave of the movie, but it stood on its own as a side-scrolling action title. The SNES had plenty of platformers and beat 'em ups by then, and this one fit right into that mix without trying to reinvent the wheel.
You control Morgan, a pirate hunting for pieces of a treasure map across different islands. The game plays out screen by screen, with you slashing through enemies using a sword, jumping across gaps, and occasionally using a pistol for ranged attacks. You explore caves, ships, and forts, hunting for keys and map fragments while fighting off guards and other pirates. The pacing is fairly straightforward, though some enemy patterns and platforming sections can trip you up. It feels like a solid, no-frills action game that gets you into the pirate mood without overcomplicating things.
