Cutthroat Island came out for the Sega Genesis in 1995, published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was part of that wave of movie tie-ins that tried to capture the pirate adventure craze, landing on a console already packed with action platformers. You play as a pirate, naturally, hunting for pieces of a treasure map across a series of islands.
You control a sword-wielding pirate, moving screen by screen through levels filled with enemies, traps, and occasional platforming sections. The main goal is to find all the map pieces, which involves exploring each area thoroughly, defeating guards and rival pirates, and navigating environmental hazards. Combat relies on timing your sword swings rather than rapid button mashing; you block, attack, and gradually break through enemy defenses. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be punishing, with limited continues and enemies that hit hard. It feels like a slow, methodical brawl where every encounter demands your full attention.
