You control a squad of cyborgs with wild abilities—hovering, shapeshifting, swimming—constantly swapping them to solve platforming puzzles while managing a shared health bar and cooldowns. It’s messy at first, but once you learn who does what, planning your team for each level clicks.
Cyborg 009 on SNES is one of those weird, ambitious platformers that actually makes switching characters feel meaningful. You’ve got eight cyborgs (plus a baby who just chills at base), each with totally different abilities—like 002 hovering mid-air or 007 shapeshifting into enemies. At first, I kept forgetting who did what, but after a few missions, you start planning ahead: "Okay, this level’s full of water, better bring 008 the swimmer."
What’s cool is how they share one health bar, so swapping mid-level to use someone’s fire breath or x-ray vision actually matters. The SP system keeps you from spamming powers, though—you’ll wait agonizing seconds for that rocket knee to recharge. And yeah, grinding XP to upgrade stats is totally a thing, but the upgrades feel noticeable, especially when your speedster finally stops getting wrecked by basic enemies.
It’s janky in that very 90s way (good luck figuring out 007’s transformations without a manual), but the anime aesthetic and variety make it stick. Just don’t expect the baby to help.
