Game Overview

Daiku no Gensan (or Hammerin’ Harry if you grew up with the arcade version) is one of those Game Boy Color games that somehow makes swinging a hammer at everything feel like the most natural thing in the world. You’re Gensan, a carpenter who’s clearly had enough of people messing with his job sites, so now you’re just smashing through enemies, obstacles, and the occasional breakable wall with a mallet the size of a small child.

The first level throws you right into it—no tutorials, no hand-holding, just you, some goons in hard hats, and a whole lot of jumping and hammering. The controls are simple but tight, and there’s something weirdly satisfying about sending enemies flying with a single whack. The levels get progressively more ridiculous, with conveyor belts, falling platforms, and bosses who apparently didn’t learn their lesson after the first five guys got flattened.

It’s got that classic arcade vibe where you’ll die a lot, but it never feels unfair—just the right kind of frustrating that makes you mutter “one more try” under your breath. The pixel art is bright and full of little details, like the way Gensan’s overalls flap when he jumps or the dumbfounded look on enemies’ faces mid-air. If you’ve got a soft spot for old-school platformers that don’t take themselves too seriously, this one’s a blast.
