Game Overview

Darius on the Amiga was Taito’s answer to R-Type and Gradius, but with a twist—instead of a single screen, the arcade version stretched across three massive displays, backed by booming speakers. It felt like piloting a spaceship in an aquarium full of angry cosmic fish (seriously, the enemies are all weird sea creatures). The home port had to shrink things down, but it kept the branching paths—after each level, you pick one of two routes, which means no two playthroughs are exactly the same.

The power-ups are pretty basic compared to Gradius’ weapon combos, and some levels just throw waves of enemies at you without much flair. But there’s something satisfying about the sheer scale of it, even if the Amiga version can’t quite match the arcade’s spectacle. If you’re into retro shooters with a little more freedom, it’s worth a spin—just don’t expect R-Type levels of depth.
