Play Decisive Battles of the American Civil War, Vol. 1 Online

Commanding pixel brigades across hex maps, you juggle ammo, terrain, and bad decisions—like sending artillery into swamps or cavalry into rifle pits. That sinking Civil War feeling hits hard even with chunky MS-DOS graphics.

Game Overview

Decisive Battles of the American Civil War, Vol. 1 came out in 1988 from Strategic Simulations, Inc. for MS-DOS. It was one of many detailed war games from that era, built for players who didn't mind staring at grids and stat tables for hours. The graphics were functional, not flashy, but that was never really the point.

You take command of either Union or Confederate forces, moving regiments and batteries across hex-based maps of famous battlefields. The main goal is to outmaneuver and break the enemy's morale through careful positioning and timed assaults. Key mechanics include managing supply lines for ammunition, accounting for elevation and cover in combat calculations, and dealing with command delays that simulate the fog of war. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty can be punishing if you rush. It feels like conducting a fragile, exhausting orchestra where one wrong note can unravel everything.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
