Dementium: The Ward came out in 2007 for the Nintendo DS, developed by Renegade Kid. It was one of the few attempts at a full horror experience on the handheld, using the hardware to create something genuinely unsettling in an era dominated by brighter, family-friendly titles.

You control an amnesiac patient exploring a derelict hospital, fighting off mutated creatures with whatever weapons you can find, like a lead pipe or a handgun. Your main goal is to uncover what happened to you while surviving the horrors in each new room. The game uses the dual screens effectively; the top shows your view, while the bottom displays your map, inventory, or a flashlight you must manage manually. Progress is methodical, room by room, with limited resources and some frustrating enemy respawns adding to the tension. It feels claustrophobic and genuinely stressful to play, especially with headphones on in a dark room.
