Descent II came out in 1996 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games lineup, developed by Parallax Software and published by Interplay. It was a time when 3D games were still finding their footing, and this one pushed the tech with its fully realized six-degrees-of-freedom movement. You weren't just running on a floor; you were flying in any direction through mines and alien installations.
You control a small, agile spaceship, navigating maze-like levels to destroy reactors and escape before everything blows. The game emphasizes spatial awareness: you float, roll, and strafe through tight corridors, using lasers, missiles, and other weapons to take out hostile robots. Some enemies, like the Thief-Bot, will steal your weapons if you're not careful, adding tension to already chaotic firefights. The pace is fast and the challenge is high, with limited resources and respawning enemies keeping you on edge. It feels disorienting and intense, like being lost in a dark, claustrophobic hive full of things that want you dead.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
