Game Overview

Dokapon Gaiden is one of those weird, wonderful SNES games that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s basically what happens if you mix a JRPG with a board game and then throw in some good old-fashioned backstabbing. You roll dice, move around the map, and either fight monsters or screw over your friends (sometimes both).

The battles are simple turn-based affairs, but the real fun comes from the chaos between turns. Stealing items, rigging mini-games, watching someone’s carefully planned route get ruined by a random event—it’s the kind of game where alliances last exactly one turn before someone betrays you for a better sword.

Pixel art’s bright and cheery, hiding just how ruthless the gameplay gets. Play it solo and it’s decent; play it with friends and it’s an absolute mess in the best way possible. Just don’t blame me when someone flips the table.
