Play Donkey Kong [a1] Online
Climb girders, dodge barrels, and rescue a woman from a giant ape in Donkey Kong on Atari 2600.
I first played Donkey Kong on the Atari 2600 back in 1983. It was published by Coleco, and while it wasn't as detailed as the arcade version, it was still a solid port for the system. At the time, having a recognizable arcade game at home felt like a small victory, even with the hardware's limitations.
You control Mario, a carpenter trying to rescue a woman from a giant ape. The goal is to climb a series of girders while avoiding obstacles like rolling barrels, fireballs, and falling cement pans. You move left and right, jump over gaps, and climb ladders to advance screen by screen. The game moves quickly, and the difficulty ramps up steadily, especially once the fireballs start appearing. It feels frantic but satisfying when you finally make it past a tough screen.
