Game Overview

Donkey Kong (JU) is one of those NES platformers that feels simple at first, but gets brutal fast. You're just Jumpman—later Mario—climbing ladders and dodging barrels to save Pauline from the big ape. The first level seems manageable, but then the fireballs start moving unpredictably, and those bouncing weights become a nightmare.

I remember getting stuck on the elevator stage for ages—timing jumps between moving platforms while barrels roll down at you is way harder than it looks. The hammer power-up helps, but it doesn’t last long, and sometimes you just panic and miss your swing.

What’s interesting is how much personality the game has for something so early. Donkey Kong’s little cutscenes between levels tell a story without words, and the industrial setting gives it a weird, grimy charm. It’s punishing, but you keep coming back because each attempt feels just a little more possible.
