You wake up in a pixelated wasteland with nothing but eerie synths for company, poking at cryptic machines until the world starts making a little too much sense.
Earthrise, released in 2011 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection by Masthead Studios, is a game that feels like it was pulled directly from the era of floppy disks and command prompts. It doesn't try to be flashy; it just drops you into its world and expects you to figure things out, much like many of its contemporaries from the early days of PC gaming.
You control a lone explorer on a desolate, alien planet, tasked with uncovering the fate of a lost colony. The gameplay is built on methodical, screen-by-screen exploration, interacting with environmental consoles to solve logic puzzles, and managing a limited inventory of tools to bypass obstacles. There is no combat; the challenge comes from deciphering the world's obscure rules and surviving its environmental hazards. Progress is slow and deliberate, often requiring careful observation and patience. It feels less like playing a game and more like slowly piecing together a forgotten history from scattered, malfunctioning machines.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
