Play EGATrek Online
You warp through blocky star systems, sweating over fuel levels and sudden Klingon attacks while that old EGA palette makes every close call feel desperate. One wrong move and you're staring at a blinking "GAME OVER" in garish magenta.
EGATrek came out in 1988 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Nels Anderson. It was a time when many games tried to capture the feel of Star Trek on home computers, and this one fit right in with its EGA graphics and text-based command style. You didn't need a fancy machine to run it, just a PC and some patience for its particular brand of space simulation.
You control a starship from a top-down view, navigating sector by sector through a grid of space. Your main goal is to hunt down and destroy a set of Klingon battle cruisers before they overwhelm you or your fuel runs out. Key mechanics include scanning adjacent sectors for enemies, managing limited energy for shields and phasers, and warping to new locations while avoiding supernovas. The pacing is tense and deliberate; you spend a lot of time calculating risks and planning each move carefully. It feels like a high-stakes chess match played out against a ticking clock and the void of space.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
