Game Overview

ESPN X-Games Skateboarding came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2001, developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Konami. It was part of that early wave of GBA sports titles, trying to capture the energy of extreme sports on a handheld. The game features real pro skaters like Bob Burnquist and Bucky Lasek, and it leans into the X-Games branding without overpromising.

You control a skater through timed competition levels, performing tricks to build score and complete objectives. The standout mechanic is the Mode7 effect used for halfpipe sections, which gives a convincing illusion of depth as you ride up and down the curved transitions. On flat ground, you ollie, grind, and manual to link combos, aiming for high scores or collecting letters to spell SKATE. The controls are responsive but take some practice; bailing feels frequent at first. Landing a long combo run or nailing a big air trick off a halfpipe delivers a genuine sense of accomplishment.
