You start with a leaky ship and a blank map, then suddenly you're bribing captains to avoid mutiny while racing the Spanish to claim islands—one wrong move and your crew’s eating rats or sinking in a storm.
Exploration came out in 1994 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Interactive Magic. It was a time when strategy and simulation games were gaining complexity on PC, and this one fit right in with its focus on naval discovery and survival. You don't get much hand-holding; it drops you into the Age of Sail with a ship and the open sea.
You command a vessel and its crew, managing supplies, morale, and navigation while searching for new lands. The main goal is to explore uncharted waters, claim territories, and return home safely. Key mechanics include real-time sailing with wind and weather effects, trading with natives for resources, and avoiding hazards like reefs and hostile ships. The pacing is deliberate, and mistakes with navigation or resource management can lead to failure quickly. It feels tense and absorbing, like every decision carries weight.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
