Game Overview

Extreme Ghostbusters came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, developed by Light and Shadow Productions. It was one of those licensed games that showed up late in the handheld's life, when developers were squeezing every bit of color and detail out of the hardware. You could tell they tried to capture the look of the animated series, even on that small screen.

You control one of the four new Ghostbusters, each with slightly different movement and proton pack handling. The goal is to clear each screen of ghosts by trapping them with your proton stream; you have to wrangle them into a trap, which takes some careful aiming. The game is split into distinct levels, and you often backtrack to previously cleared areas as new ghosts appear. It can be pretty unforgiving, with limited continues and enemies that respawn if you leave the screen. Playing it feels like a constant scramble to manage your energy and positioning before you get overwhelmed.
