Play Farland Story 2 (Japan) Online
You command a squad of misfits—including a surprisingly laid-back dragon—across colorful grid maps, weighing every move as political intrigue and fairy-tale weirdness collide. That 16-bit glow makes even the tough fights feel welcoming.

Farland Story 2 (Japan) is one of those SNES strategy RPGs that slipped under the radar outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got this weirdly cozy mix of tactical battles and fairy-tale storytelling. You start off with a ragtag group of heroes (including a dragon who’s way more chill than you’d expect), and before long, you’re maneuvering them across grid maps that feel like a lighter, brighter take on Fire Emblem.
The pixel art’s got that warm, 16-bit glow, and the battles are just tough enough to make you think without feeling unfair. I got stuck a couple times trying to keep my healer alive, but the game never punishes you for experimenting. There’s something charming about how it balances political drama with, say, a talking cat joining your party mid-campaign.
No official English translation means you’ll need a patch or some patience, but if you’re into retro SRPGs, it’s worth the hassle. The whole thing feels like digging up a lost SNES cartridge that somehow got left out of the ’90s strategy RPG conversation.
