FIFA 06 on the DS is one of those games that shouldn’t work as well as it does—but somehow, it pulls off a decent soccer experience on the tiny screen. The controls are simple enough (tap the touchscreen to shoot or pass), though I still fumbled a few times trying to slide-tackle. Graphics are obviously scaled down, but the players move smoothly, and the commentary, while repetitive, adds a nice touch of realism.
What surprised me was how quick the matches feel. You’re straight into the action, and before long, you’re cursing at missed penalties or celebrating a last-minute goal. It’s not as deep as the console versions, but for handheld soccer on the go, it holds up better than you’d expect. Just don’t expect Premier League-level detail.
