FIFA 07 on the DS is one of those games that shouldn’t work as well as it does on a handheld. The controls are surprisingly smooth—you’d think cramming soccer onto a tiny screen would feel awkward, but after a few matches, sliding tackles and through balls start feeling natural. The graphics are obviously scaled down, but player animations still have that satisfying weight to them.
What surprised me was how much content they packed in. You’ve got full leagues, tournaments, and even a halfway-decent manager mode. The commentary’s repetitive (no surprise there), but hearing it crackle through the DS speakers somehow adds to the charm. It’s not perfect—corners are a nightmare to defend—but for kicking around during a commute, it holds up way better than it has any right to.
