Fighting Fantasy came out in 1989 for arcades, a side-scrolling beat 'em up from Puffin Books that fit right in with the era's love for co-op brawlers. You and a friend could drop a coin and jump into a fantasy world full of orcs and skeletons, something a bit different from the urban streets of Final Fight or the mutants of Streets of Rage.

You control a warrior or an elf, moving screen by screen through a linear path, clearing out waves of enemies with your sword or bow before facing a boss. The main goal is straightforward: fight through each stage, survive the ambushes, and defeat the big monster waiting at the end. Combat relies on timing your attacks and blocks; button mashing gets you killed pretty fast. The difficulty is relentless, with enemies swarming from all sides, and it feels tense and chaotic, especially when your health is low and you're scrambling for a power-up.
