Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! DS came out in 2007 for the Nintendo DS, published by ESP Software. You control Ippo Makunouchi, a shy high school student who becomes a professional boxer. The main goal is to train, fight, and climb the ranks through Japan's boxing circuit. Signature mechanics include using the touch screen to dodge, block, and set up punches, while building up a special meter lets you unleash powerful signature moves like the Dempsey Roll. Matches are fast and demand good timing; button mashing gets you knocked out quickly. It feels like a condensed, interactive version of the anime's most intense bouts.
