Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi (or The Binding Blade, if you're going by the fan translation) is the GBA game that made me fall in love with tactical RPGs—and also made me reset my Game Boy more times than I'd like to admit. You play as Roy, this scrawny lord who somehow has to rally an army against an empire that’s basically steamrolling the continent. The permadeath mechanic means every move feels tense—lose a unit, and they’re gone for good, no take-backs.
The pixel art still holds up, especially during battle animations where fighters clash with these satisfying little sword sparks. And the characters? You’ll meet everyone from a moody mercenary to a pegasus knight who’s way too cheerful for war. Half the fun is figuring out who pairs well together—like, sure, you could send your archer alone into a forest, but do that and watch them get wrecked by bandits. Lesson learned.
Also, Roy’s here in all his baby-faced glory before he became a Smash Bros. icon. The game’s tough, but in that way where you immediately want to try again instead of rage-quitting. If you like strategy that actually makes you think, this is the one.
