Fire Emblem: Seima no Kouseki, known in English as The Sacred Stones, came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2004. Intelligent Systems developed it, and it was one of the later releases for the system, arriving as the DS was just around the corner. It felt like a polished, confident entry in a series that was still finding its footing outside of Japan.
You command a small army of characters, moving them one by one across grid-based battlefields. Your goal is to guide the twin royals, Eirika and Ephraim, as they fight to save their kingdom from a creeping darkness. Key mechanics include the weapon triangle, which dictates the advantage between swords, lances, and axes, and the permanent death of units, which makes every decision carry weight. The game introduces monster-filled optional dungeons where you can grind for experience, which slightly eases the typically stiff challenge of the series. It feels like a tense and thoughtful puzzle where every move matters.
