First Samurai came out on the Super Nintendo in 1992, published by Kemco. It was part of that wave of early SNES action games that tried to blend different genres, in this case platforming and hack and slash combat, with a distinct historical fantasy setting. It didn't have the same massive following as some other titles from that year, but it carved out its own little space.
You control a young warrior on a quest to rescue a kidnapped princess from a demon lord. The journey takes you through time periods, from ancient Japan to a futuristic city. Gameplay involves moving screen by screen, using your sword and a bow to fight off enemies, and collecting three sacred artifacts to progress. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty is notable, with enemies that respawn quickly and platforming that demands precision. It feels like a constant, deliberate push through hostile, beautifully pixelated environments.
