Flash Gordon came out for the Atari 2600 in 1983, published by Atari themselves. It was one of those games that tried to bring a movie license to the console, back when arcade ports and simple action games ruled the living room. You control Flash Gordon, moving through a series of single-screen levels. Your main goal is to rescue astronauts scattered around each stage while avoiding or shooting spider-like enemies. The top half of the screen is where most of the action happens; you have to dodge spider warriors up there while carefully aiming your shots at the enemies below. If you accidentally shoot one of the astronauts, you lose a life, so precision matters. The spider pods keep spawning more enemies the longer you ignore them, which adds pressure. The game moves at a steady pace, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as you advance. Playing it feels like a constant balancing act between rescue and survival.
