Game Overview

Fune Tarou is a Japan-only Super Nintendo Entertainment System release from 1995, developed by KID and published by Irem. It arrived late in the SNES lifecycle, a time when many developers were pushing the hardware with more complex or visually ambitious games, yet it chose a simpler, action-focused approach centered on maritime rescue.

You control a small tugboat captain tasked with saving ships from sinking in stormy seas. Your main objective is to navigate choppy waters, toss ropes to secure distressed vessels, and carefully tow them back to the safety of the harbor before time runs out or they take too much damage. Signature mechanics include using a net to fend off pirates who board your boat, as well as timing your movements to avoid massive waves that can easily capsize you. The pacing is tense; one mistake can lead to a chain of failures, and the physics of the water add a layer of unpredictability. It feels like a constant, frantic battle against both the clock and the elements.
