Game Overview

Gods (Japan) on the Sega Genesis is one of those weird, clever games that doesn’t play by the usual rules. At first glance, it’s a side-scrolling action platformer—you’re some buff hero swinging a sword through ancient ruins—but then it starts messing with you. The game actually adjusts its difficulty based on how well you’re doing, which is either brilliant or cruel depending on how many times you’ve died.

What really stuck with me was the thief mechanic. There’s this little A.I.-controlled guy who follows you around, stealing treasure if you’re not careful. But here’s the twist: you can trick him into triggering traps or solving puzzles for you. Half the time I wasn’t sure if I was outsmarting the game or if it was outsmarting me. The whole thing has this odd, almost experimental vibe that makes it stand out from typical 16-bit action games.

It’s not perfect—some of the platforming feels stiff, and the adaptive difficulty can make progress unpredictable—but there’s nothing else quite like it. If you’re into retro games with weird ideas, this one’s worth a look.
