Golden Sun came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by Camelot and published by Nintendo. It was one of those RPGs that really showed what the handheld could do, with detailed sprite work and a big world that felt impressive for the time.

You control a group of young Adepts, characters who can wield Psynergy, a form of elemental magic used for both combat and solving environmental puzzles. Your main goal is to prevent the ancient power of Alchemy from being unleashed upon the world, which involves traveling across continents, delving into multi-level dungeons, and engaging in turn-based battles. Two key mechanics are using Psynergy outside of battle to move obstacles or reveal hidden paths, and collecting and assigning Djinn, little creatures that modify your stats and allow for powerful summon attacks. The pacing is deliberate, with plenty of exploration and puzzle-solving between story beats, and the difficulty encourages thoughtful party management. It feels like unraveling a large, intricate tapestry where every new ability opens up another part of the world.
