Game Overview

Golf Classic was a 1990 Game Boy release from Nintendo, one of the many simple sports titles that helped fill out the handheld's early library. It arrived before the system had a huge number of deep, complex games, offering a straightforward digital version of a familiar sport you could play in short bursts.

You control a golfer seen from a top-down perspective, aiming to complete each hole in as few strokes as possible. The core of the game is its three-click swing mechanic: you press a button to start a power meter, press again to set the power, and a final time to try and stop the marker for accuracy. You must constantly account for the lie of the ball, the wind speed and direction shown on screen, and the slopes on the green when putting. The game moves at a deliberate, thoughtful pace, and the unforgiving nature of the swing meter makes consistency a real challenge. It feels satisfying to finally read a green correctly and sink a long putt after so many frustrating attempts.
