Grand Theft Auto 2 for the Game Boy Color came out in 2000, developed by DMA Design and published by Rockstar Games. It was one of the few attempts to bring the open world crime series to a handheld, and it arrived at a time when players were used to simpler, scaled down ports. The top down perspective and chunky pixel art made it feel like a throwback even then, but it had its own rough charm.
You control a nameless criminal trying to rise through the ranks of three rival gangs by completing missions. The main goal is to earn enough respect to access each gang's final job and eventually leave the city. You steal cars, run over pedestrians, and evade police; missions range from simple deliveries to armed robberies and assassinations. Driving is twitchy, and the small screen makes navigation tricky, but the freedom to cause chaos is still there. It feels scrappy and unpredictable, a pocket sized dose of anarchy that never takes itself too seriously.
