Game Overview

GunForce is basically Irem’s take on Contra, but with way more explosions and a title that sounds like an 80s action movie. You start off blasting through jungles and military bases, mowing down enemies with a spread gun that feels way too satisfying—until you realize the bosses are absolute bullet sponges.

The controls are a little stiff compared to Contra, but once you get used to it, the sheer chaos of screen-filling firefights makes up for it. Also, that subtitle? "Battle Fire Engulfed Terror Island" is the kind of over-the-top nonsense I wish more games had. It’s not perfect, but if you love run-and-guns, this one’s worth a few deaths.
