Game Overview

HacX is a 1997 MS-DOS first-person shooter released by Banjo Software, a title that emerged during the shareware era when independent developers could still carve out a niche with ambitious projects. It runs on a modified version of the Doom engine, placing it firmly alongside the wave of user-made content that expanded the life of classic '90s shooters, though it stands as a complete, commercial product with its own identity.

You control a mercenary infiltrating the facilities of a malevolent corporation, shooting your way through office complexes and industrial zones to dismantle their operations. The game progresses screen by screen, requiring you to find keycards, solve simple environmental switches, and eliminate all opposition in many areas before moving on. Combat is fast and straightforward, relying on a small arsenal of exaggerated weapons like the rapid-fire nailgun and a screen-clearing disintegrator to deal with the varied enemy roster. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can be punishing, especially in later levels filled with hitscanner enemies. It feels like playing a particularly vicious and self-aware piece of fan fiction that got a boxed release.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
