Harpoon came out in 1989 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Three-Sixty Pacific, Inc. It was a serious naval simulation during a time when many strategy games were simpler or more abstract. You controlled modern warships and submarines, managing sensors, weapons, and movement across a large tactical map.
You command individual vessels or entire task forces, hunting enemy ships while protecting your own. The main goal is to outmaneuver and destroy opposing fleets using a mix of sonar, radar, and various missiles. Key mechanics include managing weapon ranges and fuel supplies, along with evaluating sensor contacts to avoid friendly fire. The pacing is deliberate, with long stretches of tension broken by sudden, decisive engagements. It feels like conducting a high stakes chess match where every move could lead to victory or disaster.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
