Game Overview

Heavy Unit -U.S.A. Version- came out in arcades in 1988 from Kaneko. It was part of that wave of late 80s shooters where developers were really pushing hardware to handle more sprites and bigger explosions. You don't hear about it as much as some other titles from that year, but it had a presence.

You control a large, slow-moving mech that lumbers across a horizontally scrolling battlefield. Your main goal is to survive through each stage, clearing out enemy ground units, tanks, and aircraft while confronting a large boss at the end of every level. Two mechanics define the action: you can collect power-ups to change your main weapon's firing pattern, and a separate button lets you deploy a temporary shield that blocks incoming fire. The pacing is deliberate due to your mech's weight, and the difficulty comes from managing your limited shield energy against dense enemy attacks. It feels like carefully navigating a gauntlet where every movement and shot placement matters.
