Game Overview

Hexen on the Nintendo 64 came out in 1997, developed by Raven Software and published by id Software. It was one of the darker, more atmospheric first-person games on the system, standing apart from the brighter platformers and racing titles that dominated the era.

You choose one of three characters—a warrior, mage, or cleric—each with unique weapons and abilities, then explore a series of interconnected, puzzle-heavy levels filled with monsters and environmental hazards. Your main goal is to find and activate switches, gather keys, and solve spatial and inventory-based puzzles to progress through the grim, medieval-style worlds. Combat is methodical, often requiring you to manage limited ammunition and health while navigating maze-like structures; the pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be punishing if you rush. The overall experience feels tense and immersive, pulling you into its moody, dangerous world.
