Play Hugo's House of Horrors! Online
You type commands like "use key on door" and wrestle with the parser while exploring a creepy house—it’s clunky but weirdly satisfying when you finally outsmart its old-school logic.

Hugo's House of Horrors came out in 1990 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by David P. Gray. It was a text parser adventure with static graphics, typical of the era when players relied on imagination and typed commands to interact with the world. The game drops you at the front gate of a spooky mansion with one goal: rescue your girlfriend, Penelope, from whatever lurks inside.
You control Hugo, typing actions like "open door" or "take key" to navigate screen by screen. The main objective involves solving inventory based puzzles, avoiding instant death traps, and uncovering the house's secrets. Signature mechanics include careful observation of each room's details and experimenting with verb noun combinations to progress. The pacing is deliberate, often frustrating when the parser misinterprets commands, but it feels rewarding when a solution finally clicks. Playing it is a mix of patience and trial and error, wrapped in a distinctly early 90s charm.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
