Incunabula came out in 1984 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Avalon Hill. It was a text adventure, a common genre at the time, but it stood out for its sheer density and refusal to hold your hand. You were dropped into a world of obscure puzzles and minimal feedback, typical of the era's design philosophy, where figuring out the parser itself was half the battle.

You control an unnamed protagonist exploring a surreal, multi-level dungeon. Your main goal is to solve a sequence of abstract logic puzzles, often involving manipulating objects and navigating non-Euclidean spaces. The game relies heavily on screen-by-screen exploration and inventory-based puzzles, with a pace that is deliberately slow and methodical. The difficulty is notoriously high, demanding careful note-taking and a lot of trial and error. Playing it feels like slowly untangling a very complex knot with only your wits to guide you.
