Game Overview

Okay, so Insects in Space is one of those weird, early Amiga shooters that makes you go, "Wait, what?" at least twice before you even start playing. You control St. Helen—who, yes, is inexplicably topless (the manual really wants you to know about her "big breasts")—as she flies around the ruins of Earth trying to save babies from mutant space bees. It’s like Defender, but with more… questionable design choices.

The levels scroll sideways, but here’s the twist: there’s a top and bottom screen, each with different layouts. Bees snatch babies from one layer, drain their life to spawn monsters, then drop them to their doom. You’ve got to shoot the bees mid-kidnap, which the game helpfully points out with a radar. The babies can either be dropped safely for points or held onto until they magically turn into power-ups. Oh, and Helen can summon a dust cloud to warp closer to trouble—handy when the bees are swarming.

It’s janky, it’s bizarre, and honestly, the whole "topless savior" thing hasn’t aged well. But if you can look past that, there’s a surprisingly tense shooter underneath, especially when you’re juggling rescues and dodging enemy fire. Just… maybe don’t play it with other people in the room.
