Game Overview

International Championship Athletics is one of those classic Amiga sports games where you’ll either master the joystick waggling or destroy your wrist trying. Pick a country (I always went for something obscure, like Kenya or Finland) and dive into a full Olympic-style lineup—sprints, hurdles, long jumps, even the weirdly specific steeplechase.

The controls are pure chaos in the best way. Some events have you mashing the fire button like a maniac, others force you to balance power and angle meters just right. Pole vault? Good luck with that. The camera jumps between side-scrolling for races, static side views for jumps, and top-down for throws, which keeps things from feeling repetitive.

You can practice events beforehand, which is basically mandatory unless you enjoy failing spectacularly at the discus. It’s the kind of game where you’ll groan at first, then suddenly realize you’ve been grinding the 110m hurdles for an hour straight. The Amiga had a ton of track-and-field games, but this one sticks with you—mostly because your hand never forgets the joystick trauma.
