Game Overview

Konami released International Superstar Soccer for the Game Boy Color in 2000, a time when handheld soccer games were rare and often simplified. It was a pocket-sized take on their larger console series, trying to fit a full match onto the small screen without a lot of frills.

You control one player at a time, switching automatically to whoever is nearest the ball, with the main objective being to score more goals than the opponent. Signature mechanics include aiming and powering up shots with a two-press system, performing sliding tackles to dispossess attackers, and using through passes to break defensive lines. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty can spike sharply, especially against clever AI that capitalizes on mistakes. It feels surprisingly responsive for a handheld title, making each successful goal feel earned.
