Game Overview

International Superstar Soccer 64 was my go-to soccer game back in the N64 days—way before FIFA took over everything. It’s got that classic arcade feel but with enough depth to keep you hooked. You can pick from national teams or club squads, and the World League mode is brutal—70 matches against every team in the game. Good luck keeping your stamina up.

What I loved was how the AI actually fights back—none of that predictable, robotic defending. The J-League version (if you’ve got it) is a fun twist, but the international teams are where the real rivalries happen. Exhibition matches are great for quick play, but the scenario challenges? Those are sneaky hard. "Score in the last 30 seconds" sounds easy until you’re frantically mashing buttons.

Oh, and the training mode isn’t just some throwaway feature—you’ll need it. The controls take a minute to get used to, especially if you’re coming from modern soccer games. And yeah, the camera angles are a nice touch, though I always stuck with the classic sideline view. Nothing beats a four-player penalty shootout when you’ve got friends over, either.

It’s rough around the edges now, but back then, this was as close as you got to feeling like a pro.
