International Superstar Soccer '99 for the Game Boy Color came out in 1999, developed by Konami. It was one of the few portable soccer options at the time, offering a condensed version of the sport on a handheld that was better known for platformers and RPGs.
You control a team of players, passing and shooting with simple button combinations. The main objective is to score more goals than the opponent across various tournaments and friendly matches. Signature mechanics include sliding tackles to dispossess attackers and powerful long range shots that can surprise the keeper. Matches are fast paced and a bit unpredictable, with an emphasis on quick breaks rather than slow buildup. It feels scrappy and immediate, a game where every possession could lead to a chance.
